Before you begin this count and graph activity, decide if you want to use the color picture or the black and white version. If you want to reuse this with multiple students or future classes, try the color version and laminate it for durability.

If you decided to use the black and white version, you could have your students color it as an extra step in the activity.

Once the picture is in front of your students, make sure that they have the count and graph sheet with the corresponding number on the top. If you use the wrong number, the pictures will not match.

Look at the items on the counting side. Count those items in the picture and put the total in the box next to the picture. Do this for all of the included items.

Once you have the totals, start coloring in the correct amount of boxes for each shape. This will create a bar graph.

The highest number these graphs include is 10. This makes it a perfect first graphing activity for preschool, kindergarten and possibly even first grade. The counting and graphing is all within 10 so the numbers should be manageable for younger learners.
