Printable Catholic Escape room for the Seven Sacraments

Catholic Escape Room: The Seven Sacraments is a no prep, 9 puzzle printable Catholic escape room that combines logic puzzles and Catholic teaching about the Seven Sacraments into an hour's worth of fun.

How an Escape Room Works

Have you ever done an actual escape room? First of all, I can't even imagine the genius that goes behind planning, designing and collecting all the items that go into physical escape rooms. But let me describe to you what you do:

The first one we ever tried was a Peter Pan themed escape room. It was 3 rooms and you had to “solve” each room before the doors unlocked to the next room.

When we first entered the room, we were told a story and given background information about what our mission would be. And then we were set loose in a room.

But we had no idea what to do.

Did the random letter blocks need to be put in ABC order? Did they spell out a word if we rearranged them? Did they need to be stacked? Did the toys on the floor mean something? Did we need to pick them up or search for a specific toy?

In an escape room, it is trial and error. You look at what is in the room, try to solve the puzzles and use any clues you find.

If you get stuck, you can push a button for help and one of the workers will give you a clue or tell you if you are on the right track. But we only had a limited amount of times we could ask for help.

And the clock was ticking down from 60 minutes.

Our first escape room was not a success - we figured out what to do and solved a lot of puzzles as a team, but we didn't make it to all the rooms to “escape” in enough time.

But it got us hooked. My kids loved it. My husband and I had a blast solving puzzles. We came back for other themed escape rooms and to finish the Peter Pan one.

I wanted to bring the fun and excitement of our experiences in escape rooms to Catholic homes and classrooms - but with way less planning and prep because I know teachers and parents do not have the time for that! That's why I created printable Catholic Escape Rooms for kids.

Frequently Asked Questions about Catholic Escape Rooms

What ages is this for?

This has been tested for ages 7-12. Younger and older students could definitely do it, it just might adjust the amount of time it takes to complete.

How long does it take to complete?

Test groups finished between 45 minutes and an hour. Length of time will really depend on how long you as the adult wait before you jump in and give a hint on how to solve the puzzle. I recommend letting them try and struggle on their own for a bit so they can really work on critical thinking, problem solving, and resiliency.

It also depends on if students are working individually or as a team on this.

You could set a timer for 60 minutes and see if they can beat it. Or if you want them to complete all of the puzzles just have them work on it until finished without a timer.

Catholic escape room reveal ideas

What do I need to get ready?

Since this is a printable Catholic escape room, no props or prep work is needed. You will print out each of the 9 puzzles (just one for the entire class) and then a recording sheet for each student. They will do their work on this so that no writing happens on the puzzles and they can be reused.

I list an optional purchase of a 4 digit programmable lock found for less than $10 on Amazon. It is not required, but it added an extra element of fun when my daughter and nephews got to actually enter their final code into the lock to see if it would pop open.

Is this for parents or teachers?

Both! This can be done at home as a family or can be done in a classroom setting. Also works for youth groups, Vacation Bible School, religious education classes and so much more!

What knowledge do my kids need to complete this?

These puzzles are a combination of critical thinking puzzles and information about the Seven Sacraments. Knowledge of the sacraments might help them solve the puzzles faster but is not required. You will find key vocabulary related to the sacraments used in the puzzles.
