All the ladybugs will have 12 or less dots on their back to count.

  1. Download and print out the ladybug cards on cardstock.
  2. Laminate for durability and to make it so you can write and wipe off the answer.
  3. Cut the cards apart on the thin black lines.
If you do not want to laminate these, but still want the write and wipe concept, print and cut apart (optional) and slide the cards into a reusable dry erase pocket instead.

To use these cards, students will count the dots on the first lady bug. Then they will count the dots on the second ladybug and subtract that number from the first one.

Once students have come up with an answer, they will write it after the equal sign using a dry erase marker. After students complete the cards, they can use a cloth or paper towel to wipe away the answer.

My five year old was struggling a bit with this concept so I pulled out some mini erasers and showed her how to count out erasers to match the dots on the first ladybug. Then she would take away erasers from that pile to match the second ladybug. She counted how many erasers she had left and then wrote the number on the card.

Using mini erasers or any type of counter like this is a great way to support and scaffold students who need a little bit more support and could benefit from a more hands on approach. If students don't want/need counters but need a little more support, they could cross out dots on the first ladybug using their marker to help them figure out how many are left.
