Letter L Picture Book

To start our study of the letter L and a week of fun activities, we read the book Leopold the Lion by Denise Brennan-Nelson. This is a cute book about a lion who leaves the circus to live with kids secretly in their house. They quickly learn that is not the right place for him and he needs to be performing. We talked about how the word lion starts with L. Then I showed my daughter what an L looked like in the book and we searched for other L's. I made sure to pick a book that matched the picture that we would create next for our alphabet art book.

For the alphabet book we are working on, we added L is for Lion. My little one asked for Kwik Stix paint sticks again. They are her absolute favorite. Everything turns into a colorful rainbow...and then some. The alphabet book is part of my Alphabet Centers with Real Pictures.

Letter L Handwriting Practice

To practice writing the letter L, I put our alphabet tracing sheets in a reusable plastic sleeve and gave her a dry erase marker. As she worked on this, I grabbed our next activity.

Letter L Identification

We practiced identifying the letter L in all different fonts with our L page from our Alphabet Centers pack. We used our favorite dot marker in lion colors this week and she worked on this while I set up the next activity.

Letter L Fine Motor Fun

For some fine motor fun, we did activities that started with the letter L. First up was lacing practice. I love this as a fine motor activity. She practiced weaving the shoelace through the holes. I found this set in the Target Dollar Spot back in December. We grabbed the Christmas set, but they had other sets too. I know they currently have felt lacing sets right now if you can't find these. These are similar if you just want to order some - Farm Lacing Cards

Another activity we worked on was our light table, because L is for Light. You can read more about how we made our own light table here. She practiced picking up and sorting our little plastic shapes by color.

Alphabet Review

To review the letters we've covered so far, we got out our DUPLO blocks and practiced making the letters of the alphabet out of them. I got these free Lego Templates from 123homeschol4me.com.

Looking to practice the alphabet in your classroom or at home? You can find our Alphabet Centers with Real Pictures that are featured above in my TpT store.
