With St. Patrick's Day coming up, I wanted to spend some time with my girls learning more about the beloved Catholic saint, Patrick. I wanted them to understand that the holiday isn't really about leprechauns and pots of gold. I'm excited to read them The Secret of the Shamrock when they are a little older so they can learn more about St. Patrick. In the meantime, we read some facts from our Encyclopedia of Peg Saints about St. Patrick. We talked about how he was a bishop and that bishops wear a special hat called a miter. A lot of times when we see St. Patrick in pictures, artists have him wearing green and with a miter on his head. I explained that we would make a "stained glass version" of his miter to hang up for St. Patrick's Day.

Steps for Making The Miter

To make the black outline of the stained glass you have a few options. You can print the template on white cardstock and cut out the black border. This will mean that the backside will have a white border. If this doesn't matter to you, this is the easiest option.

The other option is to print the template and cut out the outline of the miter and then trace it onto black cardstock. Cut out the outline. Then you will have black on both sides of the stained glass project. This is a little more time consuming as it adds an additional step. Just a difference in how it looks.

Stick the miter outline onto the sticky paper. I usually use contact paper for this, but happened to have transfer tape on hand. It was actually a lot easier to work with than contact paper - no back to peel off, not as flimsy, etc.

Use the yellow tissue paper to make a cross in the middle. Then fill in the rest of the space with green tissue paper.

Try to stay inside the black border. It is okay if pieces of tissue paper overlap.

Once the whole thing is filled in with tissue paper with no clear spaces showing through, use a second sheet of sticky paper on top of the mitre to seal it in. Basically you are laminating it (without the heat) to seal in the tissue paper.

This is what they look like from the back. You can see the white border on the ones where I just printed the template on white cardstock and cut it. Because it was going to be hanging on our kitchen window and no one would really see the back, I really didn't mind, but generally I like the nice black border around it to make the colors pop.
This is the view from the front after we stuck the two pieces of sticky paper together and then cut around the edge. Now they are ready to be hung up.

But first we held the miter up to our head to remember where they go! Then I used a little tape to hang them on our window so the sun could shine through the colors.
