Number Line Whack

Number line games to build number sense in young learners

Word wall whack was one of my favorite games to play in the classroom.  I would give two students fly swatters and tell them a word to find.  The first one to locate the word on the word wall, whack it with the fly swatter and read the word was the winner.  It was so much fun and I knew I wanted to play it on a smaller scale with my girls at home.

Since we are not to the point of word walls yet, I decided to use a number line instead.  I bought this felt banner at Target (thank you Dollar Spot) and hung it in a straight line using washi tape.  I would call out a number and my daughter would find it and hit it with her mini fly swatter.  Little sister followed along, happy to hit the numbers too.  After we practiced identifying the numbers, I would give her little puzzles to solve like "what number comes after 8?" or "what number comes before 4?"  We had a lot of fun with this game and the girls loved that they had permission to hit something!

I designed some question cards to go with the number line whack game.  There are 24 cards total that focus on numbers 1-10 only.  They include questions such as "Find the number _____," "What comes after ____," "What comes before _______," and "What comes in between ___ and ____."  These are great to add a little variety to the game instead of just searching for the number.  I like that it also helps young learners become familiar with position words.
